Even after all these years of international involvement in Afghanistan, the women under those blue burqas can still seem so mysterious—so “other.” I hope to introduce you to the women and girls I knew in Afghanistan—some who are fighting for their lives behind enemy lines—even the lines drawn across the thresholds of their own homes.
The failure to effect the sweeping changes once hoped for in Afghanistan leaves the world ready to throw up its hands in defeat. My prayer is that whatever happens, we will not forget the women inside Afghanistan, or those who have taken flight as refugees to neighboring countries, or even far-flung places like, America or Europe.
